malala British press ‘sexism’

Malala

a study analysing British press coverage of celebrated teen activist malala yousaf- zai found it contains con- siderable sexist and patron- ising views towards wom- en in muslim countries.

even when coverage of yousafzai would be thought to be positive, the study of over 140,000 words in The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Independent, The Sun and The Telegraph, high- lighted how it it often re- duced the youngest ever nobel Peace winner to a passive victim and even that “shot Pakistani girl”.

Rosie Walters, a post- graduate researcher at the university of Bristol, who carried out the findings, said: “the West has often been guilty of portraying women in muslim coun- tries as passive and as vic- tims. malala yousafzai challenges that stereotype in every way, which is why i wanted to analyse the coverage of her.”
